As a filmmaker…

My greatest strength is my vivid imagination. Since my childhood I have been fortunate enough to be able to create my own characters in my own world for stories. I have been inspired by Quintin Tarantino’s masterpiece of The Hateful Eight ’ and James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’. I highly admire their unique way of story narration. And also, I am inspired by the stories of others whom possess affection and intimacy with their own story. Therefore, through my lenses I reflect and share their experiences so that the rest of the world would have the chance of witnessing them once again as that of mine.

In order to capture the feeling of the story and depict it smoothly through my narration, I put myself in the shoes of my story’s character and make sure it’s perceived appropriately and accurately by the viewer. I am encouraged and empowered by the impact that I had on those I helped their stories to be heard by the people, as well as the positive and generous feedbacks from my colleagues. For my future works I am looking forward creating a worth remembering masterpieces produced with dedication and care.

Logline:

The Somali community in Ankara are suffering this homesickness syndrome where each and every single grown up Somali is seeking a place to find the atmosphere of being at home. Yet, coming and gathering around same dish ‘Anjero’ might be the only solution to come over this loneliness and yearning for home. Where the community gather and share laugh and stories, others enjoy the nostalgia of moments left behind.

The Anjero project:

As every immigrant knows well, there is always something you are missing, a gap in your heart which you would like be willing to fill. That feeling is mostly related with homesickness and loneliness in the hand of a very strange atmosphere. Thus, people look for different ways to come over this challenge and try to have at least an atmosphere of being reunited with their beloved land and people. The applied methods for solution can differ, but generally a small bite of traditional pancake cuisine can mean a lot for many. Said that, for the case of Somalis, the Anjero (in Somali: Canjeero or Canjeelo) is considered the most common breakfast in all Somali regions..

Under this topic, I want to make a short 15-20 minutes documentary. Where I want to emphasize how this dish unites many immigrants who are living here in Ankara, where they meet every weekend at this newly opened Somali restaurant. This restaurant is a place where children, men and women feel reunited as if it were their home, and the dish serves as tool of reconnecting remotely with back home. Therefore, in my documentary I will present the essentiality and importance of being united around one dish which brings back a vivid imagination and feeling of inner peace in the heart of many desperate Somali immigrants here in Ankara.
